This week I started a new routine that I am trying to turn into a habitual habit. If you read my previous post on The Art of Recycling you will know that creating a new habit can be hard, but if you stick with it for long enough it will simply become second nature. 

I have a full time job, wife and daughter as well as trying to start my own business to help others recycle. On top of all that I also have several other personal goals I would like to achieve like learning Chinese and meditating everyday.

Previously I have tried to put aside time each evening to focus on moving each of these goals forward, however I found that due to the everyday unexpected items that occur, my personal goals are always the first items to be de-prioritised or I end up staying up way too late which has an adverse effect on my health and energy levels. 

I am not a morning person I hate going to bed and I hate waking up even more. However I recently decided to set my alarm for 6am everyday, thats 1 hour earlier than I usually have to get up for work. My intention is to set aside this extra hour everyday to centre myself and to make sure that I am moving forward with each of my goals.

So far this seems to be working, my wife and daughter stay asleep and there are no other distractions or todo items that have built up over the day and I have been able to move several of my goals forward already. 

At the moment my morning routine looks like this.

  1. Wake up at 6:00am (I intend to try and push this earlier if possible).
  2. Drink a glass of water (I am trying to drink the recommended 2 litres a day).
  3. Meditate (Mindfulness helps me stay focused throughout the day).
  4. Work on at least one item for my blog (write a post, do research etc.).
  5. Complete at least One Action towards my personal goals.
  6. Read one chapter of a book (Currently reading Getting Things Done).
  7. Set One Action I need to achieve at work in order to move my career forward.
  8. Shower.
  9. Leave for work.

There are many more items I would like to add here like exercise and studying Chinese, but I normally need to leave for work by 7:30am at the latest so fitting them in has been difficult. That is one of the main reasons why I would like to start getting up even earlier each morning. Once I am used to the 6:00am start I intend to start pushing it back in 15 minute increments to see how much earlier and how much more productive I can be each morning. 

I also know a lot of people believe in setting up multiple things to achieve during the day, but I have found having one action I need to complete ensures that I just get started and make sure to get that one thing done (small steps) which often spurs me on to do more actionable items towards my other goals. 

In addition the above routine has given me a lot of motivation and power over the past few days. At any point during the day I know that I have already achieved more than most other people do in their entire day.
